What was your fitness, CrossFit, or yoga "life" like before you started training with True Spirit CrossFit & Yoga?
I have participated in CrossFit since shortly after my son was born in the summer of 2013 while we lived in Arizona. Unfortunately, after just over a year, I had a back injury that set me back for quite a while activity wise. I had started Yoga a few weeks before my injury, with the intention to help my body with flexibility and recovery CrossFit. I did workout occasionally at that box and the separate Yoga studio until we moved, but my back struggled to regain full strength.
What brought you to True Spirit CrossFit & Yoga in the first place?
My family and I moved back to Bozeman in the summer of 2015 and my best friend was a CrossFit coach at another affiliate. He knew because of my history and what I was ultimately looking for in a box, and he recommended I contact Leslie at TS. I joined a few weeks after that first time meeting Leslie, and have been here ever since.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
The tight knit community is something that is represented across the CrossFit spectrum, but this community seems to be even a step above the norm. This to me was a great first impression, and to this day I still enjoy how interactive our community is inside and outside of the gym.
What was the first fun or positive thing you experienced while training with us?
I'm a big guy, so somethings just don't appeal to me, but doing them is the trade off for the thing I like a lot... Lift Heavy Things. Since I have been at True Spirit, my back is healed and stronger than ever, and overall I am stronger than ever. Getting that back has made me very excited.
Are you working on any special CrossFit related skill now?
The skill I work on most, is trying to show up consistently. I have never been one to cherry pick workouts, and I do take a little bit of pride in my willingness to suffer through the things I don't like. By embracing those things, I found that I am continuously adding something new that I wasn't able to do before. Sometime soon I will have consistent doubleunders, and I'm not far from my double bodyweight deadlift, two completely opposite achievements.
How has you life changed since training with us?
Playing with my children is something that is very important to me, and ultimately the reason why I started CrossFit those years ago. Today, not only am I able to play with my son more actively, I have the strength to toss him feet into the air, which he loves. His happiness, makes me happy.
What's your favorite True Spirit CrossFit memory?
Probably the day that I hit a 405 pound 1 Rep Max Personal Record (PR) on the deadlift. Even though I have exceeded this PR since, this day signified that I had reversed course on my back injury, and had blown my previous best away (365 pounds). This day was also my son's third birthday, and all evening long he talked about how strong daddy is. Made my day to be "back" while also having my son look up to me so much.
