This week's Whole Life Challenge weekly lifestyle challenge is getting 7 hours (or more) of sleep everyday. Today's Whole Life Wednesday blog post was penned by Coach Noah. Sleep is important. We’ve all heard this before (probably as kids), along with the recommendation that it should be for eight hours every night. There is more and more research showing that this is a little simplistic. It turns out that for most of humankind’s time on Earth, we have not had the luxury of getting a solid eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. We were more likely to sleep a few hours, do something quiet for a bit (like fend off hungry saber-tooth tigers), and then go back to bed for a few more hours. This model still comes close to the 8 hours total, but breaks it up a little more. There is another way this is overly simple that is especially important to us as high intensity athlete. The more vigorously we train, the more we need to sleep. You cannot train like a super-hero in the making, sleep just a few hours a night, and then expect to make big gains. Proper sleep is a part of the sacred trinity of your health (the other parts being proper movement and proper nutrition). If you neglect it, you will have wasted the potential gains of your hard work in the gym and the kitchen. Finally, age also plays a role in our sleep needs. You need more sleep as a baby than you do as an adult. You also need more sleep as a teenager. As you grow older, you tend to need less and less shut-eye. Many older people can get by on as little as six hours a night. I caution you, however, to listen to your body in this matter, as in all others. Do you feel tired all the time? Do you lack energy at the gym? Try going to bed a little earlier. My guess is you won't be disappointed.
