It's Mental Toughness Thursday. Today we return to our study of The Four Agreements with the Second Agreement: Don't Take Anything Personally. This agreement can be a serious roadblock for many people. It certainly was for me when I opened True Spirit CrossFit. I was so upset when some of my friends joined other CrossFit gyms. Every time I lost a client I viewed it like a break-up. I was headed down a fast and slick road to depression until I took a merciless self-examination (I wrote about that in my last Mental Toughness blog.) I had to really own my own crap and understand that people treat me they way they do because of who THEY are not because of who I am. That's what it means to not take things personally. People usually act in their own self interest, and once you free yourself of the burden of thinking people treat you because of who you are, you can begin to see situations more clearly. You are no longer reacting to what other people say. You can begin to control your own emotions, thoughts, reactions and actions. Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. If they had a great day they will treat you well. If they had a bad day they will not treat you well. Either way, their treatment of you has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with them. You're nature is independent of anyone else. This is true if someone has a good opinion of you or a bad opinion of you. Their opinion is not about you, it's about them. Remember that and you'll free yourself from mental slavery. Good luck!
