It was a full house for Karen at the 5:15pm class!
We are reading Omnivore's Dilemma for our mind, body and spirit book club. This book, which follows the natural history of four modern meals, has been known to change lives. Coach Leslie read the book in 2008 and immediately committed to being a locavore. In fact, she was so passionate about eating locally that she applied to be in a year-long study (competition!) to eat locally. The program called, Locavore Nation, was sponsored by American Public Media's Splendid Table radio program. Coach Leslie was one of 15 people selected out of 15,000 applicants. She (and by association James) ate over 90% of their food from within 500 miles of Reno, Nevada. At the time of the challenge, Coach Leslie worked for the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and was able to incorporate her passion for local food into her job. Her talks, presentations, interviews and demonstration garden earned her the respect of her community and a Golden Pinecone Award, a locally prestigious environmental award. Eating locally is not as difficult as you may think! Even now, at the start of our Montana winter, you can acquire great local produce, meat, eggs and cheese. There is a Winter Farmers' Market in the Emerson Cultural Center. While it is on hiatus through the December Holidays, you can order local food through Market Day Foods. Coach Leslie places her order online every weekend and picks up her box of local food every Wednesday at The Wine Gallery (coincidence?). There are several pick-up locations throughout the Gallatin Valley. You can also find great local eggs and some produce at the Coop, and Town & Country. To support your local eating efforts, we'd like to have a "cow share." We will order an entire steer (or two) and divvy it up between share holders. If you are interested in participating in our cow share, please let us know in the comments. Today's Workout 3 Rounds for time 10 Deadlifts 275/185# 50 Double unders
