Our mind, body, spirit book club selection is Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. This book takes an entertaining, and critical look at several food systems in the U.S., the industrial food system, industrial organic food system, and the local food system. These systems are explored through the production, from source to preparation to consumption, of one entire meal. Among several disturbing revelations in the book, is the one that our food travels an  average distance of 1500 miles before it reaches the grocery store.

This long journey requires food to be picked before it's ripe, treated with ripening agents, or alternatively, anti-spoiling agents, thus not allowing the food to have its full compliment of nutrients. Food that has made this journey can be not only be nutritionally bereft, but also tasteless and unappealing. No wonder the trend in the U.S. over the last 50 years is reduced fruit and vegetable consumption.

Pollan, the book's author, makes a strong argument for eating seasonally and locally. He asserts that seasonal and local food not only tastes better, but it's more nutritionally dense. Seems like a good reason to us! While it may seem difficult to acquire local vegetables in the middle of our Montana winter, we actually have great access to seasonal local vegetable and frozen local fruit.

One of our favorite sources of local food is Market Day Foods. Market Day Foods is an online farmers market where you can purchase meat, eggs, vegetables, fruit, oils, coffee, tea and a variety of gluten free products from Montana, and some Wyoming and Idaho producers. You purchase and pay for your food through the secure on-line checkout by midnight Monday night, and then pick it up at a variety of locations on Wednesday. We pick up our box of fresh or frozen local food every Wednesday at 4pm at The Wine Gallery. This makes it easy to select a nice bottle of wine to go with our Montana grass-fed beef, lamb or pork!

Our second favorite source of local food is the Bozeman Winter Famers' Market in the Emerson. This market is from 9-noon two Saturdays a month. The next market is Saturday, Jan. 17th. Get to the market early if you want eggs and spinach, those are always the first items to be snatched up.

Coaches Leslie and James have been eating about 85% of their food locally since they moved to Montana in 2010. They are happy to help you make the switch to our fabulous sustainable, local food system.
