J-Bo jumps!
It's Mental Toughness Thursday and we are continuing our study of The Invictus Mindset, An Athlete's Guide to Mental Toughness. The first pillar of mental toughness is goal setting. Setting goals allow us to succeed. Goals give us something to work for. Big fat hairy goals can put butterflies, or fire, in our belly. Goals can help us hone in on our why and give us focus. Focus is one of the three mental toughness attributes of the first pillar of The Invictus Mindest (the other two are commitment and motivation.) A great mental toughness exercise to help us get focused is to get clear on why we want to achieve something. Knowing our why will give us purpose. It will help us keep going to the gym, weighing our food, abstaining from wheat, dairy, sugar, alcohol, etc. Knowing our why will help us stay on target. Spend just a few minutes today thinking about why you do CrossFit. Write down everything that comes to your mind. Try not to judge or censor your answers. Once you've written everything down, review your answers. Do you see trends? Are you intrinsically or extrinsically motivated? Try to distill all of your brainstorming into one concise statement, "I CrossFit because________," "I CrossFit so I can________." Now, write that statement on a sticky note and put in your bathroom mirror. Put in on your 'fridge. I once made my why statement into my password on my computer. That way I reflected on it multiple times a day. The Invictus Mindset states that knowing our why is the fuel for our unlimited human potential. That's a pretty damn compelling reason to become clear on it. More importantly, knowing our why gives us focus. Focus is what helps us stay consistent. Consistency is how we become successful. What is your why? Feel free to share in the comments.
