YEAH! More Olympic Weightlifting today:-) Today's workout is from the very first CrossFit Games Open. The Open started in 2011 and this was the third workout released. You can think of it as a heavier and longer version of Grace. Olympic Weightlifting develops speed, power and strength. You don't need to lift heavy to benefit from it. Even light weights can help develop speed and power. For most of us today, the weight should be moderately heavy. Olympic weightlifting has been an Olympic sport since 1896. The exact versions of the clean, jerk and snatch have changed over time (split snatch was once the standard style and there used to be a clean and press competition). Women were not included in Olympic competition until 2000, a mere 18 years ago. The very first women's world Weightlifting championship was in 1987. We've come a long way baby! In fact, women have been discouraged from weightlifting for fear it would be damaging to our reproductive system (in the dark ages doctors thought that our uterus would fall out of our body if we exerted ourselves), or for fear that we would become too bulky, or for fear that we would actually find our power. Today, I want all of you, men and women, to find your power. The barbell can help you find it, I promise.
