The 6am crew is all smiles as they do walking lunges. CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman said the biggest adaptation to CrossFit is between your ears. That's why every Thursday I write about mental toughness. What you learn to overcome in the gym is a mental toughness skill you can transfer to life. One of the mental and physical fitness standards we seek to develop in the gym is the ability to perform well at any and every task imaginable. Glassman describes fitness as this, "Picture a hopper loaded with an infinite number of physical challenges where no selective mechanism is operative, and being asked to perform fetes randomly drawn from the hopper." Our fitness programming is designed to help you be prepared for the unknown and unknowable. Physically we program for the hopper model. Yes, we do follow some important training guidelines (at least one day without a barbell, one heavy day per week, one day per week with no overhead movement, one long day per week), but we follow CrossFit's constantly varied high intensity functional fitness model as much as possible. If you attend at least 3 classes per week you should be exposed to varied programming that develops your ability to perform well at all tasks, even unfamiliar tasks, and tasks combined in infinitely varying combinations. If you attend 4 or more classes per week your ability to physically perform well at unknown tasks will increase. However, if you cherry pick your workouts, or opt out of certain days and times because of your own self-imposed constraints, you develop a hole in your armor. Your durability and adaptability decline. How will you respond when nature throws you a curveball to which you need to respond physically and mentally? How would you physically and mentally respond if you tripped and fell, were in a bike accident, drove up to a vehicle accident? Would need to be rescued or would you be a contributor to the rescue effort? The mission of our gym is to help people find their power, both physical and mental power. If you attend at least 3 classes per week, come to class no matter what the WOD is, and remain open to coaching, you will find your power and become harder to kill. If you've been doing this CrossFit thing for a while now and have never read Greg Glassman's What is Fitness article. You have a major hole in your knowledge armor. Read it today! Make copies and give one to any of your friends, family and co-workers who think CrossFit is not one of the best strength and conditioning programs available!
