Cortisol it NOT the problem.
Chronic stress is the problem.

Cortisol is our body's primary stress hormone. It helps us manage stress, blood sugar and inflammation. It is ESSENTIAL for life and lately it's getting demonized by social media influencers. Some of these quackadoodle online experts are calling it the, "death hormone."
Nope! Cortisol is essential and when our body releases it in response to stress it is literally saving us from death. What is causing us all so much trouble is how our minds respond to stress. It's our inability to down-regulate our thoughts, cope with our emotions, and free ourselves from mental slavery that cause so many "cortisol" challenges.
Here is a fantastic and short Fit Bottomed Girls podcast Dr. Carla DiGiralamo (the lead instructor for my Navigating Menopause CE course.) In this podcast Dr. Carla breaks down how and why cortisol works as it does. She debunks several cortisol myths and gives us the real scientific skinny on what's really going on in our hormonal milieu.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:
  • Cortisol isn’t the villain—it's essential for life and fitness. It’s the hormone that helps you tackle challenges, whether that’s a tough workout or life stress. However, it’s all about returning your stress response system to baseline after activation.
  • Stop worrying about “spiking your cortisol.” You need cortisol to be responsive to outside stressors in order to survive. Instead, start focusing on returning your stress response system to baseline regularly through proven down-regulation strategies like meditation, leisure walks, gentle or relaxing yoga.
  • Burnout isn’t caused by cortisol—it’s caused by chronic stress. Dr. Carla shares how to address what’s triggering your elevated stress rather than blaming cortisol itself.
  • Why aging changes the game. Recovery gets trickier as women age due to changes in resilience and hormonal shifts, but proper recovery strategies can keep you thriving. Strength training, nutrition, and mindful recovery are more important than ever.
  • The limits of hormone testing. Single snapshots from blood tests can be misleading! Dr. Carla explains why you need to focus on the bigger picture of your health.
  • Under-fueling = underperforming. Under-eating can actually be a big cause of persistent internal stress and elevated cortisol levels. Nutrition fuels your body for workouts and recovery.

Today I plan to eat protein grams equal to my body weight. What about you?

What's for Dinner?

The past 2 weeks I have been exploring the importance of fueling to support our activities. As athletes, that is anyone who exercises with intent, which is everyone at our gym, we must eat to support our training.
Today is a heavy day and we all need protein to recover and become stronger. At a MINIMUM we need to eat protein grams equal to our lean body mass. This will ensure you don't lose any muscle or bone density. On heavy lifting days we need MORE protein. Do you know how many grams you need? If not, it's time to book a Check-in with me.
In the meantime, check out this protein rich recipe from The Splendid Table for beer and honey glazed pork loin. It's a terrific weekend recipe that just might give you leftovers for Monday's lunch.

Why BMI is Bullshit

I started CrossFit in March 2010. The past 15 years of CrossFit have provided me with one of the most fun, challenging and rewarding athletic endeavors in which I have participated. CrossFit introduced me to obstacle course racing (I have completed 4 races), Olympic Weightlifting (I was the 2019 World Champion in my age and weight class, and the Tactical Games.
In the past 15 years my body has changed DRAMATICALLY!
But do you know what hasn't changed in the past 15 years? My Body Mass Index.
Body Mass Index is the mathematical relationship between your weight and height. You can find your BMI by going to your Weigh Ins page of your BTWB app. It's calculated for you every time we take your weight and measurements during our quarterly check-ins.

The BMI is a controversial statistic and its critics argue that since it does not measure body fat it's not useful. I agree with this criticism. BMI is a diagnostic tool that insurance companies and health care providers use and it tells us NOTHING about how healthy we are. A story from NPR Life Kit describes the history of BMI:
The body mass index was created by a 19th-century Belgian statistician named Adolphe Quetelet. It was built as a tool to assess weight distribution across populations and was based on his idea of "the ideal man," using a small sampling of the size and measurements of white, male Scottish and French soldiers.

Then in the 1970s, a number of prominent American doctors, tired of insurance companies setting arbitrary weight and mortality standards for insurance payments, adopted and rebranded Quetelet's index. But the BMI was never meant to measure individual health and, again, was based purely on studies of white men.
If you are a Scottish or French male soldier then BMI might tell you something. But if you're not, it's a totally worthless measurement. It also has a link to the Nazi's. How gross is that? The BMI measurement was used by the Nazi's for their disgusting Eugenics program. You can read about that here.
So what is a better measurement to help us understand our health? Body composition measurements using tools like the BODPOD or a electronic body composition scan can give us much more detailed insight into our health. These tests will tell us our body fat percentage, and the electronic body scan can also show muscle gains over time. It can even break the data down into specific body parts such as trunk, legs and arms.
As part of their How to Thrive As you Age:  The Science and Secrets of Longevity, National Public Radio recently did a deep dive into the ease and efficacy of body composition scans. Body fat percentage is a better predictor of health. According to the NPR story:

The American College of Sport Medicine sets fitness categories for body fat based on age and gender, but there is not an agreed upon target for what is considered ideal. Using the ACSM standards, most Americans could be classified in the poor fitness category, as the average body fat among adults in the U.S. is 33%.

The U.S. military considers the optimal body fat for military fitness to be between 10% and 20% for young men and up to 25% for middle-aged men. Women typically have more body fat, with an ideal range from 15% to 30% for young women and up to 38% for middle-aged women.
Fortunately for us, Montana State University Nutrition Research Laboratory conducts body composition using BODPOD and electronic body scan testing to the public and MSU community for a small fee. I can also calculate body fat percentage (with a 2% error rate) during our New Year Check-in.
To learn more about these tests and how they can help you thrive as you age, listen to the short 3-min audio from NPR.
Remember, knowing your body fat percentage is part of learning how to properly fuel your body for performance. We can calculate all of that together at your New Year Check-in. Book yours today!

Female Hormones and Body Composition

All this week I am exploring how much to eat to support our training. By far, the most common question I get during our New Year check-ins is, "How much should I eat?" Most of us have a goal to control our body composition so that we maximize our lean mass and keep our body fat percentage below a specific level.
Many, many of us have a weight loss goal. I understand and respect our desire to have a healthy weight. I also want to stress that it might be more important to track our lean mass rather than our body weight.
Our body is amazing and the skin, muscle, bones, organs and body fat all play a vitally important role in our homeostasis. Lean mass influences our metabolism and body fat influences our endocrine system, aka hormones. This is why body fat percentages above 30% for men and women younger than 50 are a concern. Body fat is hormonally active and the more we have of it the more it impacts our insulin, cortisol, and other hormone regulation. Drop it below 30% and you reduce the risk of most metabolic diseases.
Lean mass, notably, muscle, is metabolically active. The more we have the better we are able to stave off many diseases of aging (osteoporosis and sarcopenia, and to some extent diabetes and metabolic X syndrome.) You can ameliorate many of the health risks of high body weight by have more lean mass and lower body fat. That's why your body composition (lean mass and body fat) matter much more than your body weight. Remember, I can calculate your lean mass at your check-in or you can get it tested on campus.
For us women, our hormones, during puberty, reproductive years, and the menopause transition can give us all kinds of challenges. This is especially true if we are athletes, which all of you at the gym are:) That's why I'm sharing this excellent and short podcast from Wild Health featuring Dr. Carla DiGirolamo the lead instructor of my Menopause continuing education course that I just finished. She provides an excellent synopsis of how our hormones impact body composition through all the phases of our hormonal journey. No matter where you are in your life, puberty, reproductive years, our menopause transition you will definitely learn something from Dr. DiGirolamo. Click on the link below to listen or go here.
In this episode, Dr. Mike Stone and Dr. Carla DiGirolamo, board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologists who specialize in all aspects of fertility care, will be discussing a topic that is of utmost importance to many women - weight management and its relationship to female hormones.

Dr. Stone and Dr. DiGirolamo will explore the variety of roles that hormones play in female weight gain and loss. The doctors will share their insights on how decoding the menstrual cycle can point to answers on weight management and how hormone replacement therapy can be a viable option for some women. We'll also hear Dr. DiGirolamo's take on oral contraception and how it relates to weight loss and gain in women.

But it's not all about medication - lifestyle interventions can also play a key role in optimizing weight and hormone health. Dr. Stone and Dr. DiGirolamo will explore some of the options available to women who want to take control of their weight and health.
If you want to get a personalized nutrition plan or help with your performance goals, book a New Year Check-in with me. I'm only scheduling Check-ins for one more week, so take advantage today!
