Charlene is regular in our 9am class. She has made terrific progress since joining us in September. She has dramatically changed her body composition and is focusing on increasing her strength. She has decreased her body fat by 5%, gained 10 pounds of lean muscle mass and lost 2 pounds of body weight since training with us! Char, Why Do You Do CrossFit?What was your fitness life like before you started training with True Spirit CrossFit?
I had not much knowledge of CrossFit before coming to True Spirit. Not enough to form an opinion. What brought you to True Spirit CrossFit in the first place? I had been at another private gym that had just closed its doors forever. With that, I knew I needed to find something quick. I didn't want to go to a generic gym because I knew I wanted to keep conditioning and getting stronger, but needed much help, meaning I needed a trainer since the only athletic experience I have had as an adult was at the other gym. I was quite lost in what was good for me! What was your first impression? Has that changed? My first impression was a Saturday morning workout in the park. The coaches and classmates were so easy to meet and chat with. I instantly felt comfortable. I didn't feel like I was being watched or judged. What was the first thing fun or positive thing you experienced while training with us? I am so enjoying the various workouts! Never a dull day and it's always changing! And I continue to get stronger! I especially like the skill building. I'm still working on doing ONE pull up, but progressing faster than I have in the past 3 years because of the specific workouts for that one pull up! Are you working on any special CrossFit related skill now? My pull ups and getting those rows perfected! How has you life changed since training with TSCF? When I started at TSCF, I had always wanted to get leaner, since I'm in my 50's. Leslie took my measurements and at the retest I had not only gained 10 pounds of mass, but lost 2 pounds! I used to make stabs in the dark about what to eat. I ate mostly meat and produce, but had never had a daily goal of how MUCH protein to eat in a day! It's a lot, but it made all the difference to not have to guess! What's your favorite True Spirit CrossFit memory? Having the retest!

Myth: Winter Holiday Weight Gain is InevitableThanksgiving started the 6 weeks winter holiday eating season. You don't have to gain weight this year. Weight gain is OPTIONAL, and to opt out successfully you need a plan. If you really want to avoid gaining weight this winter, you MUST have a plan. Failure to make a plan is planning to fail. Or, in this case, planning to gain. What does a plan look like? It's includes knowing ahead of time how you will respond to predictable situations. For example: Do you know how you will politely say no when your mom offers you a third slice of pie? Do you know how you will navigate your fourth holiday zoom party of the weekend without consuming your 15th alcoholic drink in 2 days? How will you eat the rest of the week after a weekend bender of egg nog and Christmas cookies? How much water should you drink? How much protein should you eat? Lucky for us all, Working Against Gravity has published a holiday survival guide. You don't need to eat every single holiday cookie to enjoy the season, nor do you need to keep a bag of baby carrots hanging around your neck. You can have your fruit cake and eat it, too. The WAG guide will show you how. The winter holidays are fun and stressful. This year why not create a plan that will help you navigate the churning seas of eggnog and pumpkin pie? Take some time today to read a good book and take a nap.
